How to set the Exu Brasa Candle

Smoke cleanse the house first
Light the charcoal in the defumador, throw in the dry herbs and pass through the house from the back to the door. The smoke takes the weight out before the candle calls the guardian.

With the defumador still releasing smoke, stop at the door and say a Laroyê. Ask permission from Exu and the people of fire to consecrate the Brasa candle.

Consecrate the candle outside
Place the saucer in the backyard or near the gate, on stone or cement ground. Leave the defumador next to it, in a place where the ember can go out on its own safely.

Light it and say what cooled down
Light with a match, serve the cachaça and speak what cooled down in your life: will, money, relationship. Ask for heat for one thing at a time, and say the prayer.

Let the ember go out on its own
Do not blow on the candle or throw water on the hot defumador. Wait for it to cool. The ash goes to the earth, the cachaça also, and the leftover wax comes out wrapped for the trash.
Precautions before lighting
- Defumador and candle together require double attention: stone ground, no curtains or dry grass nearby, and never leave an ember lit without anyone watching.
- Smoke cleanse with windows open. Those with asthma or respiratory problems should avoid the smoke; this does not replace the care of your doctor.
- Exu Brasa warms, he does not burn anyone. A request to harm or bend the will of another person is outside of his foundation.
- Ritual work with embers and the fire of Exu, done in the terreiro, is for a prepared medium. At home, only the candle and simple smoke cleansing (defumação); the rest is with the zelador.
