The Sulamita / Esmeralda Romani candle is a bicolor votive, green on top and gold on the bottom, with the Romani woman's label painted on the front. Those who seek it almost always arrive with a request from the heart or the pocket: a love that cooled, a phase of short money, the desire to look in the mirror and like what they see. It appears in the congás of Umbanda that receive the Romani gira and on the home altar of those who are devoted to the Romani women spirits.

Sulamita is one of the most called Romani spirits (ciganas) in Brazil, and the name recalls the beloved of the Song of Songs. Esmeralda, as the name itself says, carries the green stone. Many houses treat the two as distinct Romani spirits, from neighboring lineages; the label joins the two because they work in the same field of love and prosperity. The green speaks of hope and of things that grow, the gold speaks of gold and luck. The greeting is Optchá, and Friday is the most remembered day.

It is advisable to separate the two figures. The cigana of this candle is a spirit of the right, from the Eastern Line, and works with counsel, perfume, flower, and cards. The Pombagira Cigana is the guardian of the left, with another foundation. And neither of the two binds anyone's will: what they offer is charm, courage, and an open path.

What is it for

What is the Sulamita / Esmeralda Romani Candle for?

Half green, half gold, the candle of Cigana Sulamita and Esmeralda belongs to the Romani people (Povo Cigano) of the Eastern Line (Linha do Oriente). It is lit to ask for true love, abundance in work, self-esteem, and clarity when opening the cards.

  • I want a sincere love in my life

For those who have been alone for too long or live in a lukewarm relationship. The Romani spirit does not force anyone: she works on your attraction and your way of opening up to those who are worth it.

  • Abundance in work and in commerce

The gold is the Romani gold. Light it at the start of a business, during a week of weak sales, or before negotiating a price, together with a clean coin next to the saucer.

  • Self-esteem and personal shine

After a breakup, a criticism that hurt, or a dull phase. The candle asks for the good vanity back, the one that makes a person dress up for themselves.

  • Clarity to read the cards

Those who read the Romani deck usually light the candle before opening the table, asking for clean intuition and the right word for those who will hear the reading.

  • Joy back home

For homes that became heavy and without laughter. With low music and a flower nearby, the Romani firmeza usually brings lightness to the routine, without needing anything sophisticated.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the green and gold candle to Cigana Sulamita

“Cigana Sulamita, Cigana Esmeralda, mistress of the growing green and the shining gold, I light this candle with an open heart. Open my path the way a scarf opens in the wind. May the love that arrives be true and come of its own free will, and may the love that already lives with me gain care and joy. Put abundance on my table and in my work, without greed and without envy of anyone. Restore the shine of my eyes when I forget who I am. Saint Sarah, protect my journey and those who walk with me. May this flame dance like the Romani people dance, and may I know how to thank every open door. Optchá!”

Step by step

How to set the Cigana Sulamita / Esmeralda Candle

  1. 1

Cover a cheerful corner of the house

Spread the colorful handkerchief on a firm table or shelf, preferably near a window. The Romani woman spirit likes light, color, and an airy place, never a dark and forgotten corner.

  2. 2

    Set the Romani table

Saucer in the center, cup to the right, flower to the left, and the coin resting at the base of the saucer. Each piece has a reason: the cup toasts, the flower pleases, the coin calls for abundance.

  3. 3

Hold the candle and state your request

With the candle in your hands, speak to the Romani spirit as if talking to an older friend. Say what you want and why you want it, without beating around the bush. It is in this moment that the candle gains its destiny.

  4. 4

Light it and greet with Optchá

Light with a match, say who the candle is for, and say the prayer. If you are in the habit, soft Romani music helps to set the festive atmosphere that this line appreciates.

  5. 5

    Finish and keep the coin

Do not blow: let the candle burn until the end. The coin goes into the wallet or the cash register, the dried flower returns to the earth, and the drink from the cup goes into a vase or garden.

Precautions before lighting

  • The votive candle stays lit for days: use a firm saucer, away from loose scarves, curtains, and out of reach of children or pets. The lining scarf must not touch the flame.
  • This candle is for love that arises from free will. Do not ask to bend anyone's head or to separate a couple; it is not the work of the Romani spirits of light.
  • A Romani gira, the consecrated foundation (assentamento), and major offerings have their own foundation. This is with the zelador of your terreiro, who knows the Romani spirit (cigana) who accompanies you.
  • Card reading with the lit candle provides guidance, but does not decide for you. Serious choices regarding money and life also require a conversation with someone who understands the subject.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Vela de Cigana Sulamita / Esmeralda shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

Living flame that seems to dance

Many houses read a flame that moves with joy, without wind, as the Romani woman spirit being present and pleased with the table she received.

  • Good sign

    High and golden flame

Sign read as an open path, especially in requests for abundance. Continue doing your part at work, and the firmeza will accompany you.

  • Observe

Wax that drips down the green side

Some readings associate the tear on the green with hope that is still forming. Before that, check if the candle is not tilted or in a draft.

  • Attention

    Low flame and without brightness

It usually indicates discouragement from the person who lit it or a confused prayer request. Review what you actually want, arrange the table, and relight the candle another day, calmly.

  • Attention

    Very black glass from soot

First trim the wick and take the candle out of the wind. If it still darkens, some people read it as heaviness in the environment: an herbal bath before the next candle helps.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Cigana Sulamita / Esmeralda Candle

Are Cigana Sulamita and Cigana Esmeralda the same spirit?

In most houses, no. They are two Romani women spirits of the Oriente Line with similar work, focused on love and prosperity, and that is why the candle brings together both names. Some houses treat one name as a manifestation of the other. The way your house teaches is what matters.

What is the best day to light the Sulamita Romani candle?

Friday is the most cited day for the Romani spirits of love. There are terreiros that hold the Romani gira on another day of the week, and many people prefer the crescent moon for requests of abundance. If your house has its own day, follow that one.

Is the Cigana Sulamita candle used to tie someone down?

No. The right-hand Romani spirit works with charm and free choice. She helps you open up, value yourself, and attract those who also want to be close. Forcing another person's will is not her path and is not what this candle does.

What is the difference between Cigana Sulamita and Pombagira Cigana?

Cigana Sulamita is a right-hand spirit (entidade de direita), from the Eastern Line (Linha do Oriente), and works with counsel, perfume, and cards. Pombagira Cigana is a guardian of the left who wears Romani clothing, with a different foundation (fundamento) and a different grounding (firmeza). Each has its own candle and offering.

Can I light the Romani spirit candle at home without being from a terreiro?

You can. The simple firmeza, with a cup, flower, and prayer, is a common devotion among those who are fond of the Romani women spirits. What remains for the terreiro is the gira, the spirit incorporation, and the larger offerings, which require guidance from those who know the tradition.

Can I blow out the Romani woman's 7-day candle and light it again?

The best way is to let it burn continuously. If you need to leave, smother it with a lid or a saucer, without blowing, and relight it upon returning with a quick word to the Romani spirit. Blowing is seen as undoing the request.

What to do with the coin, the flower, and the leftovers afterward?

The coin goes into the wallet or the store's cash register, as a seed of abundance. The flower and the drink return to the earth of a pot or garden. The glass and any leftover wax go into the common trash, wrapped in paper.
