Yellow and White Candle
Oxum (Oshun)'s abundance guarded by the peace of Oxalá (Obatala), to prosper without losing your calm
Yellow and White Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
On the shop shelf, the yellow and white candle is usually chosen by those who have already tried the yellow one alone and felt something was missing. Yellow calls for abundance, movement, and sweetness. White holds all of that in place, like a lid of peace over the jar. It is the candle for those who want to prosper, but not at the cost of sleep, health, or the family's peace.
The foundation comes from two very close orixás (orishas). Oxum is the owner of the river, the gold, and the belly that generates; Oxalá is the father who molds the body and gives the breath of life. Therefore, in some Umbanda houses, this bicolor candle appears in requests for pregnancy and for blessings for the baby; it is not a rule in every terreiro. The days are divided: Saturday is for Oxum and Friday is for Oxalá, and each terreiro chooses according to the orixá who weighs more in the request.
Inside the home, it works with balance. It is not a candle for cutting, for war, or for haste. What is expected of it is that money arrives without bringing confusion along, that the head stays cool to decide, and that the home continues to be a place of rest while life improves.
What is it for
What is the Yellow and White Candle for
The yellow and white candle joins the gold of Oxum to the white cloth of Oxalá. It serves to ask for honest money without fighting at home, a peaceful pregnancy, studying with a serene mind, and gratitude to two orixás who care for life since the womb.
-
Clean money, without confusion at home
When income improves but brings discussion, envy, or exhaustion, this candle asks that abundance comes accompanied by peace. The planning of the accounts remains yours.
-
Serene pregnancy and blessing for the baby
Oxum cares for the womb and Oxalá forms the body. Many families light the yellow and white during pregnancy, always alongside prenatal care and medical guidance.
-
Studying with a calm head
For weeks of exams, competitions, or interviews. The white helps to quiet anxiety and the yellow asks for spirit. Light it before opening the books, not in their place.
-
Harmony in the home while life grows
Moving house, a new business, a child arriving: good phases also affect everyone. The candle firms a sweet and calm environment to cross this turn together.
-
Thanking Oxum and Oxalá at once
Whoever received a grace of money, a job, or a birth returns with this candle to thank both. It is a simple way to recognize that the blessing came whole.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the yellow and white candle to Oxum and Oxalá
“Mother Oxum, who makes the river flow and the gold shine at the bottom of the water, look over my house and my livelihood. Pai Oxalá, who gave shape to my body and gave me the first breath, cover with your white cloth everything I ask for today. May abundance enter through this door without bringing conflict, envy, or exhaustion. May I know how to receive with gratitude, keep with wisdom, and share with those in need. If there is a child on the way in this family, may she grow protected by your waters, Mother, and by your hands, Father. Calm my head so I can decide well and sweeten the words between us. May this light of two colors remind us that good wealth is that which lets us sleep in peace. Ora Yeyê Ô! Epa Babá!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to set the Yellow and White Candle
- 1
Cover the table with a light cloth
Choose a piece of furniture in the living room or bedroom, away from the stove and curtains. The white cloth reminds one of Oxalá, and the care in the arrangement is the first favor made to Oxum.
- 2
Take a herbal bath of sweet herbs
Before handling the candle, a warm ritual bath of chamomile or basil, from the neck down, makes the body light. Wear light clothing and wait for the skin to dry without haste.
- 3
Hold the candle and define the prayer request
With the candle in both hands, say clearly what you need and for whom it is: Oxum, Oxalá, or both. A vague prayer request tends to remain vague, so name the concrete situation.
- 4
Set up the plate with water and flowers
The candle goes in the center of the plate, the glass of water next to it, and the two roses right behind. Light it with a match, perform the greetings, and say the prayer in a low voice, looking at the flame.
- 5
Accompany it without blowing until the end
In seven days the candle asks for attention. If you are going out, smother it with a spoon and relight it later. At the end, the water goes into a plant pot, the flowers to the earth, and the wax wrapped for the trash.
Precautions before lighting
- The 7-day candle stays lit through the night: use a firm plate, away from fabrics, children, and curious cats, and never inside a closed cabinet.
- In a prayer request for pregnancy or the baby's health, the candle is devotion and accompanies the prenatal care. The doctor's guidance remains indispensable.
- This candle attracts and calms, but it does not bind or force anyone. Use it for your life and for your home, never to interfere with someone else's will.
- Offerings with honey or ritual food (comida de santo) vary greatly between houses and the qualities of Oxum. Before using any, speak with the head of your terreiro (zelador).
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Yellow and White Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Golden flame, high and without tremor
Many houses read this burning as a prayer request well accepted by both orixás: abundance arriving with tranquility, without haste.
- Good sign
Glass that stays clean until the end
A 7-day candle that ends with clear glass is usually seen as an unobstructed path. Thank the two and, if the prayer request is still in progress, light another candle later.
- Attention
Glass darkened on one side only
Some houses understand this as envy or weight coming from some direction. Take a ritual bath for cleansing, redo the candle and, if it persists, ask for guidance in a terreiro.
- Attention
Flame that oscillates between strong and weak
It usually reflects indecision in the one who lit it. It is worth checking if the prayer request is clear and if there is no wind in the room before any other reading.
- Observe
Melted wax dripping out
In general, it is a matter of the glass and the wick. Some people read it as overflowing emotion; breathe, pray again, and continue with the burning.

Questions about the Yellow and White Candle
What is the yellow and white candle for in Umbanda?
To request prosperity with peace. The yellow of Oxum calls for abundance, love, and fertility, and the white of Oxalá gives calm and protection to what grows. Therefore, it is used in requests for honest money, a peaceful pregnancy, and harmony in the home.
What is the best day to light the yellow and white candle?
Saturday, if the focus is Oxum and abundance, or Friday, if the focus is Oxalá and peace. Houses diverge, and many accept either of the two. Prefer the morning and light it on a day when you can accompany the burning.
What is the difference between the yellow and white candle and the yellow candle?
The yellow one is only for Oxum and speaks of abundance, beauty, and love. The yellow and white adds Oxalá, and with him, serenity and the blessing over the life that is forming. Choose the bicolor when the request needs calm along with prosperity.
Does the yellow and white candle help with getting pregnant?
It is lit as devotion and a request for a blessing, not as a treatment. Oxum is linked to fertility and Oxalá to the formation of the body, which is why many families firm this candle. Medical follow-up remains the main path.
Can I put out the yellow and white candle and light it later?
You can, without blowing. Smother the flame with a spoon or a saucer and relight it when you return, repeating the greetings. Ideally, the 7-day candle should burn completely, but the safety of the house comes before custom.
What to do with the water, the flowers, and the leftover wax?
The water goes to the soil of a plant or the backyard. The roses can stay in the vase until they wither and then go to the soil. The leftover wax and the glass go to the common trash, wrapped in paper.
Can I light the yellow and white candle at home without being initiated?
It is possible. It is a devotion candle open to those who respect Oxum and Oxalá. All you need is a clean and safe place and a clear intention. Obligations, assentamentos, and comida de santo are what require a terreiro and a zelador.
