Prayer of Saint Thomas Aquinas after communion

Thanksgiving of Saint Thomas Aquinas for after communing. It asks that communion be a shield against enemies and increase charity and patience.

I give thanks to you, holy Lord, Almighty Father, eternal God, who, without any merit on my part, but by the effect of your mercy, deigned to satisfy me, being I a sinner and your unworthy servant, with the adorable Body and with the precious Blood of your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I ask you that this communion not be imputed to me as a fault worthy of punishment, but intercede effectively to achieve my forgiveness; let it be the armor of my faith and the shield of my good will; let it free me from my vices; let it extinguish my evil desires; let it mortify my concupiscence;

let it increase in me charity and patience, humility, obedience and all virtues; let it serve as a firm defense against the snares of all my enemies, both visible and invisible;

let it perfectly calm and regulate all movements, both of my flesh and of my spirit; let it unite me firmly to you, who are the only and true God; and let it be, finally, the happy consummation of my destiny.

Deign, Lord, I beseech you, to lead me, I a sinner, to that ineffable banquet where, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, you are for your saints true light, full enjoyment and eternal joy, the pinnacle of delights and perfect happiness. Through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
