Benedictus (Song of Zechariah)

Benedictus

It is the song of Zechariah at the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:68-79). The Church prays it every morning: it speaks of the rising sun that comes to illuminate and guide on the path of peace.

Blessed is the Lord, God of Israel, who visited and redeemed his people, and gave us a powerful Savior in the house of David, his servant, as he promised through the mouths of his saints, the prophets of ancient times,

to set us free from our enemies and from the hands of those who hate us;

to show his mercy in favor of our parents, remembering his sacred covenant and the oath he made to Abraham, our father, who was to grant us this grace: to serve him one day, without fear, free from the hands of our enemies, in holiness and justice, in his presence, all the days of our lives.

And you, child, shall be called a prophet of the Most High, because you will go before him to prepare his paths, to make known to his people the salvation through the remission of their sins,

thanks to the merciful heart of our God, who visits us from the heights like the rising sun, to illuminate those who lie in darkness and in the shadow of death and to direct our steps on the path of peace.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, now and forever. Amen.
