The brown and yellow candle usually appears in the hands of those with an open matter regarding assets: the house that won't sell, the inventory that drags on, the financing that depends on a signature. They are two colors in a single piece, divided horizontally, and each half brings a request. The brown asks for firm ground and fair decision. The yellow asks that abundance finds the door.

In part of Umbanda, brown is the color of Xangô, king of Oyó and owner of Wednesday; in Candomblé ketu his colors are red and white. Yellow belongs to Oxum, lady of the rivers, celebrated on Saturday. In the itans, Oxum is one of the wives of Xangô, alongside Iansã (Oya) and Obá (Oba), and the bicolor joins this partnership: the law that distributes and the gold that multiplies. It is a custom of candle and of terreiro, not a fixed assentamento of Candomblé.

At home, it does not bring money out of nowhere nor undo a poorly made contract. What it sustains is the patience for a long process and the integrity of those who negotiate. Whoever lights it asking for an advantage over a brother or partner is asking the wrong person: Xangô weighs both plates of the scale, and Oxum does not bless wealth built on someone else's tears.

What is it for

What is the Brown and Yellow Candle for

In this candle, the brown of Xangô's quarry stays underneath and the yellow of Oxum's waters stays on top. The pair is lit for prayer requests for a home of your own, inheritance, sale of assets, and money that arrives through the right path, with justice and with sweetness.

  • Selling or buying a house

For the property that has been stagnant for months or the purchase that depends on approval. The candle asks for an honest buyer, a fair price, and paperwork in order. Broker and document continue to be necessary.

  • Inheritance and sharing without fighting

When the family needs to divide assets and tempers flare. Xangô takes care of the correct division and Oxum softens the words, so that the inventory ends without breaking bonds.

  • Receiving what is due

Indemnity, labor settlement, court-ordered payment, or someone's old debt. The flame asks that the value leaves and reaches your hands, without promising a date or amount.

  • Deal closed with a firm word

Before signing a partnership, commercial rent, or a large contract. The prayer request is for a clear agreement, in which both parties win and no one needs to go back later.

  • Patrimony built by two

For the couple who joins money for the first house or renovates what they already have. The union of Xangô and Oxum reminds that common good is built with agreement, not with dispute.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the brown and yellow candle to Xangô and Oxum

“My Pai Xangô, king who lives in the stone, look upon this cause that I place before you. You know both sides and know what belongs to each one. If the right is mine, make it arrive; if I am mistaken, show me before I insist. My Mãe Oxum, lady of gold and the water that surrounds the rock, sweeten the paths of this negotiation. Open the doors of the notary offices, of the banks, and of the people who will decide. Guard my house, my assets, and the peace between those who share the same roof with me. May nothing I receive come with someone else's loss. Receive this light as a sign of respect. Kaô Kabecilê! Ora Yeyê Ô!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Brown and Yellow Candle

  1. 1

Separate the paper of the cause

Take a copy, never the original, of the document linked to the request: deed, contract, case number. Write your full name and what you desire on the back, briefly.

  2. 2

Assemble the base with bay leaf

Fold the paper and place it under the saucer, with the three bay leaves on top of it. Bay leaf is the leaf of Xangô and of conquest, and marks that the request is for clean gain.

  3. 3

Pass the candle in your hands

Hold the candle by the brown part and raise your hands to the yellow, thinking first of justice and then of abundance. It is in this order that the candle was thought to work.

  4. 4

Light it on a Wednesday or a Saturday

With a match, say in a low voice the names of Xangô and Oxum and explain the request as you would explain to a judge who is also a mother: with truth and without exaggeration.

  5. 5

    Finish without blowing

Let it burn until the end and smother it with a saucer if you need to leave. Then, the water with cinnamon goes to the soil of a pot, and the paper and the bay leaf can be burned or buried.

Precautions before lighting

  • A 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: use a deep saucer, a firm surface, and keep it away from curtains, loose paper, children, and animals.
  • The request paper is a copy. Never place a deed, original contract, or identity document near the flame.
  • Property matters are also resolved with a lawyer, an accountant, and a notary office. The candle accompanies this path and does not replace any of these stages.
  • Firmeza of an orixá (orisha) with assentamento, obrigação, or ebó is a matter for the zelador of your terreiro. The candle at home is a prayer; it does not replace the fundamento.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Brown and Yellow Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

Golden and firm flame until the end

Many houses read this as an accepted request. The uniform burning shows that the cause is moving forward, even if the practical answer still takes some time.

  • Good sign

Wax dripping toward the side of the paper

Some understand that the candle leans over the requested subject. It is read as a sign of attention from the orixás to that document or business.

  • Attention

Low flame on the brown part

It may indicate that the cause still has knots to undo, such as a missing paper or a poorly negotiated agreement. Review what depends on you and light it again later.

  • Attention

A lot of smoke upon reaching the yellow

Some readings speak of envy or haste surrounding the money. It is worth lighting it with more calm and, if it repeats, seeking guidance in a serious terreiro.

  • Observe

    Wick that divides into two

Sometimes it is just a crooked wick. When it appears, some houses read it as two forces acting together. Just observe and continue the burning normally.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Brown and Yellow Candle

Does the brown and yellow candle help to sell a property?

It is used with this request, but it does not replace an advertisement, a coherent price, and up to date documentation. The custom is to place the candle over a copy of the deed, asking for an honest buyer and fair negotiation, and to keep doing the practical part with care.

What is the best day to light the brown and yellow candle?

Wednesday, if the focus is on justice and the contract, which are from Xangô. Saturday, if the focus is on abundance, which is from Oxum. Houses vary on these days, and many people light the 7 day candle on Wednesday so that it crosses Saturday lit.

What is the difference between the brown candle and the brown and yellow candle?

The brown is only for Xangô and deals with justice, decision, and stability. The brown and yellow adds Oxum, so the prayer request begins to include money, abundance, and diplomacy. For a pure process, the brown is enough; for assets and property, the bicolor is more commonly used.

Can I blow out the brown and yellow candle before it finishes?

It is not recommended, because the 7 day one was made to cross the week of the prayer request. If you are traveling or sleeping away, cover the flame with a saucer until it goes out on its own and relight it upon arrival, saying the names of Xangô and Oxum again. Blowing it out is excluded.

What to do with the paper and the leftover wax?

When the candle finishes, the paper of the cause and the bay leaves return to nature: bury them in a pot or burn them carefully in a clay vessel. The cinnamon water waters a plant. The rest of the wax is removed from the saucer, wrapped, in the house trash, and the washed saucer is ready for another firmeza.

Can I light the brown and yellow candle at home without it being from a terreiro?

You can, as a prayer and with respect. Xangô and Oxum receive the candle from whoever asks with honesty. What is not done at home is obligation, assentamento, or work with fundamento: that stays with the leader of a trusted terreiro.
