The Saint Expedito candle is the one lit when time has already passed. An exam tomorrow, a bill expiring, a scheduled hearing, a paper stuck at the registry. The saint is represented as a Roman soldier, with the palm of martyrdom in one hand and a cross with the word hodie in the other, stepping on a crow. The red candle brings this image to the oratory of those who are in a hurry but have not lost faith.

Tradition says that Expedito commanded a legion in Melitene, in Armenia, and was martyred in 303. When he decided to convert, a crow cried cras, tomorrow in Latin; he stepped on the bird and responded hodie, today. From there comes the patronage of urgencies and the feast of April 19. In some houses of axé the saint appears linked to Logunedé (Logun Ede), but this bridge varies greatly.

At home, the Saint Expedito candle asks for a clear and honest prayer request. He is the saint of just causes, not of shortcuts: no one lights his candle to get ahead of those who have more right. And the urgency is his, not of the one who asks. The flame helps not to postpone your part, which is usually the first step for things to move.

What is it for

What is the Saint Expedito Candle for

The red candle of Saint Expedite is that of the soldier of Melitene, patron of just and urgent causes. It carries the red of martyrdom and the military cloak, and it is lit when the deadline is tight: a lawsuit, a debt, a document, a job that cannot wait.

  • Cause that cannot wait

Lawsuit deadline, stuck document, an answer that needs to arrive this week. Light the candle and do your part on the same day: the saint of today does not go with postponement.

  • Urgent employment

For those who were fired, have bills expiring, or have an interview scheduled. The candle asks that the right door opens soon and that you are ready when it opens.

  • Justice and paperwork issue

Saint Expedito is remembered in matters of judgment. Light it before a hearing, expert analysis, or service at a public agency, asking for clarity from whoever will decide.

  • Debt with a set date

When money needs to appear by a certain day. The prayer request is for an honest path: a negotiation, an extra service, a late payment that finally comes through.

  • Student on the eve of the exam

Patron also of the youth and students, Expedite is sought during the week of exams and entrance tests. The candle asks for a cool head and good memory at the right time.

The devotion to Saint Expedite

    Saint Expedite

The soldier of Melitene, saint of urgencies

The name comes from expeditus, the soldier without baggage who arrives first. The red is that of martyrdom and the military cloak, and April 19, the traditional date, is the day of the feast and the pilgrimages.

  • Illustration of Logunedé in sacred art

    Logunedé

Prince of the hunt and of fresh waters

Some houses link Logunedé to Saint Expedito, for being young, a warrior, and fast. Others associate him with Saint Michael or Saint Bartholomew. There is no fixed correspondence, and the candle continues to be of the saint.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the Saint Expedito candle for the hour of need

“Saint Expeditus, soldier who answered today when the world said tomorrow, I light this red candle because my time is short. You know the cause that I bring, and you know that it is just. I do not ask you to pass over anyone. I ask that the doors that depend on others open in time, and that I have the courage to do today the part that belongs to me. Take from me laziness, fear, and the habit of leaving for later. When the grace comes, I return to give thanks and tell everyone what you did. Long live Saint Expeditus!”
Light the candle and pray

Step by step

How to consecrate the Saint Expedito Candle

  1. 1

Write the prayer request in a few lines

On a piece of paper, write the cause and the deadline objectively. Place the folded paper under the saucer, never in contact with the flame.

  2. 2

Place the candle in the oratory

Saucer on a surface that does not burn, a glass of water beside it. If you have a holy card of the saint, leave it behind the candle, facing you.

  3. 3

    Light and pray without hesitation

Light with a match, say that the candle is for Saint Expedite and pray the prayer on this page or the traditional one for just and urgent causes. Ask only once, with clarity.

  4. 4

Do your part on the same day

It is the heart of devotion to him. After lighting, take a concrete step: call, send the document, study for an hour. The candle accompanies those who take action.

  5. 5

Give thanks and fulfill the promise

Do not blow out the candle. The water goes to the earth, and the wax goes to the trash wrapped. When the grace comes, return with another candle and fulfill what you promised, such as spreading the word about the saint.

Precautions before lighting

  • Do not leave the candle lit alone at home, near paper, curtains, or within reach of children and animals. The paper of the prayer request never stays next to the flame.
  • Saint Expedite is for just causes. Do not light it to take the turn of someone who has a right nor to harm someone in a lawsuit: the candle is not for that.
  • Be wary of those who promise an answer in 24 hours for a fee. Devotion is free, and those who are from a terreiro must speak with the zelador before mixing fundamentals.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Saint Expedito candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    Live and fast flame

Many devotees read this as a request accepted with haste. The candle burns animatedly, and the message is not to stop doing your part in the coming days.

  • Good sign

Candle that ends sooner than expected

Some read this as a near response. It could just be softer wax, so also observe how the situation progresses in the following days.

  • Attention

    Low and weak flame

Some houses read this as a stuck request or discouragement from the one who lit it. Review if the request is fair and if you did your part, and repeat the candle with more firmeza.

  • Attention

Black smoke on the glass or on the saucer

It may indicate weight in the path of the request. Clean the environment, take a herbal bath and, if the sign persists, seek guidance from someone you trust.

  • Observe

Candle that goes out with the paper underneath

First check if the paper did not become damp or too high. Adjust it, light it again with a match and redo the request calmly.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Saint Expedito Candle

What is the Saint Expedito candle for?

It serves for just and urgent causes: lawsuit deadlines, employment, debt with a date, stuck documents, exam in the week. It is the candle for those who cannot wait, lit along with the decision to do your part today.

What is the color of the Saint Expedito candle?

The red one is the most used, due to the martyrdom and the mantle of the Roman soldier. White also appears in Catholic devotion, and some use green or gold. For the candle with the saint's label, red is the standard.

What is the day of Saint Expedito?

The feast is April 19. Many devotees pray every 19th of the month, and there are houses that prefer Thursday for devotion. In practice, light it when the squeeze arrives: the saint of urgencies has no set time.

How to do the Saint Expedito novena with a candle?

Pray for nine consecutive days, preferably at the same time, lighting a taper candle each day. Write the prayer request on the first day and keep the paper. Many people do the novena from April 10 to 18, ending on the eve of the feast.

Did Saint Expeditus actually exist?

There is no way to prove it. The name appears on an old list of martyrs from Melitene, and historians have raised the hypothesis of a copying error. The Church, however, has never prohibited the devotion, which remains alive with its own sanctuary in the interior of São Paulo.

Can I blow out the Saint Expeditus candle and light it later?

You can, if you need to leave, but without blowing it out. Smother it with a saucer and relight it with a match when you return. The ideal is to let the candle finish on its own, especially during the novena.
