The Pombagira Menina candle is the votive candle of a pombagira spiritual legion (falange) much sung about in Umbanda and Quimbanda. In our shop, it comes in two colors, pink on top and red on the bottom, with the painted Menina label. Those who look for it almost always want to know two things: whether Menina is the same thing as the mirim line and what it is for to light her candle at home. Both answers depend on the house, and it is good to know this before the first match.

Pombagira, as the people of santo themselves say, is a female Exu (Eshu). Menina is the name of a spiritual legion (falange), not of a single person: several spirits work with her. In many terreiros she is an adult pombagira, alongside Maria Padilha and Maria Quitéria. In others, Pombagiras Meninas is the name of the feminine mirim line, which walks alongside Exu Mirim. There is no fixed orixá (orisha) or a specific day for her recorded; pombagira giras usually fall on a Friday, late at night.

Therefore, the Menina candle asks for less recipe and more respect. It stays away from the orixá congá, near the door or in the backyard, and is lit with a clear prayer request. It is not for binding anyone or for revenge. What she sustains is the protection of the left: protection for those who walk the streets, courage to start over, and the laughter that was missing.

What is it for

What is the Pombagira Menina Candle for

Pink and red on the candle body, Menina label in the front. It is the candle of a pombagira spiritual legion (falange), guardian of the left, lit to request protection on the path, joy to return, and strength to say no to what hurts.

  • Protection for those who live on the street

Pombagira is a guardian of the path. Whoever returns late, takes a full bus, or walks alone can light the Menina candle asking for open eyes and safe passage.

  • Bring back joy

After a phase of mourning, sadness, or weight, the candle is lit to request spirit. Menina does not erase the pain, but helps the person to start taking care of themselves again and to leave the house.

  • Courage to say no

The pontos of the young-looking pombagiras speak of those who refused to be domesticated. The candle accompanies those who need to end a relationship that hurts or set a limit.

  • New beginning after a disappointment

For the end of a dating relationship, a betrayed friendship, or a plan that went wrong. The prayer request is for clarity and a firm step to move forward, never to bring someone by force.

  • Thank Menina and the left

When a prayer request made to the pombagira was fulfilled, the custom is to return with a candle and an open red rose. It is the way to recognize who worked for you.

Spiritual legion (falange) of pombagira, guardian of the left

The candle carries her name and label. Researchers like Reginaldo Prandi list Menina among the most well-known pombagiras, and Umbanda terreiros sing her pontos alongside Maria Padilha. She receives a red rose, perfume, and a candle.

In houses where Pombagiras Meninas is the name of the feminine mirim line, she works together with Exu Mirim and can receive farofa (seasoned manioc flour), cocoa, and pepper with him. Where she is an adult pombagira, this partnership does not appear.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the Pombagira Menina candle for protection and joy

“Pombagira Menina, girl of the crossroads, I light this candle with respect and with a clean prayer request. I do not come to ask for anyone's harm nor for another person's will. I come to ask for what is mine: a safe step on the street, an open eye for those who arrive with falsehood, and courage to close the door to what harms me. Return the laughter that I let fall along the path and teach me to stand up the way you stood up. Receive this open rose, this perfume, and this light as a gift from someone who knows how to be grateful. May my house be guarded by the left and may I fulfill everything I promised. Laroyê Pombagira Menina!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Pombagira Menina Candle

  1. 1

Choose a corner outside the congá

Pombagira works at the door and in the street. The candle stays near the entrance, in the backyard or at the tronqueira (the threshold altar of Exu), never next to the statues of the orixás or inside the bedroom.

  2. 2

Wait for the night to arrive

Light it after dark, preferably on a Friday. Taking a ritual bath and wearing clean clothes help you arrive before the left side with a clear head.

  3. 3

    Arrange the offering around

Place the candle on the plate, the open rose lying next to it, and the glass slightly in front. Drip the perfume on the rose, not on the candle, so as not to spread the flame.

  4. 4

Greet the Menina and make your request

Light with a match, say Laroyê Pombagira Menina and speak the request in a low voice, with a beginning, middle, and end. A vague request confuses; a request against someone is not made.

  5. 5

Let the candle finish on its own

Do not blow. If you need to leave, cover it with a saucer and relight it upon returning. At the end, the cider goes to the earth, the withered rose returns to a garden, and the wax goes wrapped in the trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • The 7-day candle stays lit for a long time. Use a firm clay plate, away from curtains, paper, children, and animals, and never leave the flame without anyone at home.
  • This candle is not for binding someone's will, separating a couple, or harming anyone. Pombagira is a guardian, and a request of this type has no place in this firmeza.
  • If the Menina in your house is a linha mirim or an adult pombagira, the leader is the one who says. Assentamento and ritual work of the left stay with the one who is initiated and leads the house.
  • Do not offer drinks to anyone under the age of majority nor leave the cup within reach of children. If your house treats the Menina as a child spirit (mirim), ask what offering she receives.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Pombagira Menina Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    Living, high, and dancing flame

For pombagira, a flame that moves without going out is usually read as a joyful presence. Many houses understand that the offering was accepted.

  • Good sign

Sparks and crackles in the wick

Some read the crackling as the spirit responding. Before concluding, check if the wick is not damp or has perfume residue.

  • Attention

Low and weak flame for hours

It may indicate a confused request or a tired head. Review what you requested, make the request clearer and, if you wish, repeat the candle on another Friday.

  • Attention

A lot of black smoke on the plate

Many houses read this as a load being burned. If it happens every time you light it, take the situation to the leader of a trusted terreiro.

  • Observe

Wax dripping from only one side

It is almost always the wind or a crooked surface. Adjust the plate, protect it from the air, and only then think about spiritual reading.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Pombagira Menina Candle

Is Pombagira Menina the same thing as Pombagira Mirim?

It depends on the house. In some terreiros, Pombagiras Meninas is the name of the female mirim line, the partner of Exu Mirim. In others, the Menina is an adult pombagira, mentioned alongside Maria Padilha and Maria Quitéria. Ask the leader which one is theirs before setting up the offering.

Which orixá is Pombagira Menina from?

There is no fixed orixá registered for her. One house links the Menina do Cabaré to Iansã (Oya), and the Menina da Praia appears linked to the sea and Iemanjá (Yemoja). Line and orixá change from terreiro to terreiro, and the correct answer for you comes from whoever leads your house.

What is the best day to light the Pombagira Menina candle?

Friday night is the most common, because that is when the pombagira giras usually happen. There is no specific day just for Menina, and there are houses that work the left side on Monday. If your terreiro has a day, follow theirs.

Can I light the Pombagira Menina candle inside the house?

You can, but outside the congá of the orixás and away from the bedroom. The most indicated place is near the front door, in the backyard, or in an outdoor area protected from the wind. Pombagira is a guardian of the passage, so her candle faces the street.

Can I blow out the 7-day candle and light it again?

You can, as long as you do not blow it out. Smother the flame with a saucer or a spoon when you need to leave and relight it when you return, repeating the greeting. Ideally, the candle should finish on its own, in a place where it can stay lit safely.

What to do with the rose, the drink, and the wax afterward?

The cider or sparkling wine goes into the earth of a garden or pot. The rose stays until it wilts and then returns to nature, without a plastic bag. The leftover wax can go into the common trash, wrapped in paper, and the plate is washed.

What is the difference for the red and black candle?

The red and black is the general candle of the left, for Exu and any pombagira. The one for Menina features pink and red and her label, and it is lit when the prayer request goes directly to that falange. If you do not know which pombagira works with you, the red and black is the safest path.
