Most Holy Trinity Calmly

Athanasian Symbol (Quicumque)

Quicumque

It is an ancient profession of faith, attributed by tradition to Saint Athanasius, which explains the faith in the Most Holy Trinity and in the incarnation. It is prayed slowly, as a meditation.

Antiphon. Glory to you, Most Holy Trinity, who are one God, before all times, now and forever. (In the Easter season: Alleluia.)

  1. Everyone who wishes to save themselves must first profess the Catholic faith.
  2. And whoever does not keep it whole and pure will undoubtedly perish forever.
  3. The Catholic faith is this: that we shall venerate one God in the Trinity and the Trinity in unity.
  4. Not confusing the persons, nor dividing the substance.
  5. Because one is the person of the Father, another the of the Son and another the of the Holy Spirit.
  6. But one is the divinity of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, equal in their glory and coeternal in their majesty.
  7. Just as the Father is, so is the Son and so is the Holy Spirit.
  8. Uncreated is the Father, uncreated is the Son and uncreated is the Holy Spirit.
  9. Immense is the Father, immense is the Son and immense is the Holy Spirit.
  10. Eternal is the Father, eternal is the Son and eternal is the Holy Spirit.
  11. And, however, they are not three eternals, but one only Eternal.
  12. As they are not three uncreated, nor three immenses, but one only uncreated and one only immense.
  13. Equally, omnipotent is the Father, omnipotent the Son and omnipotent the Holy Spirit.
  14. And, however, they are not three omnipotents, but one only Omnipotent.
  15. In the same way, the Father is God, the Son is God and the Holy Spirit is God.
  16. And, however, they are not three gods, but one only God.
  17. Equally, the Father is the Lord, the Son is the Lord and the Holy Spirit is the Lord.
  18. And, however, they are not three lords, but one only is the Lord.
  19. For, just as the Christian truth obliges us to confess that each of the persons is God and Lord, also the Catholic religion forbids us from stating they are three gods or lords.
  20. The Father was made by no one, nor created, nor begotten.
  21. The Son was not made, nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone.
  22. The Holy Spirit was not made, nor created, nor is begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son.
  23. Therefore, there is one Father and not three Fathers; one Son and not three Sons; one Holy Spirit and not three Holy Spirits.
  24. And in this Trinity nothing is prior or posterior, nothing is greater or lesser, but the three persons are coeternal and equal to one another.
  25. In such a way that, in everything, as was already said before, one must venerate the unity in the Trinity and the Trinity in the unity.
  26. Therefore, whoever wishes to save himself must have this faith in the Trinity.
  27. But, to reach eternal salvation, it is also necessary to believe firmly in the incarnation of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
  28. For true faith consists in that we believe and confess that Our Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, is God and man.
  29. He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father, before the beginning of times; and he is man, born from the substance of his Mother, in time.
  30. Perfect God and perfect man, who subsists with a rational soul and human flesh.
  31. Equal to the Father according to divinity, lesser than the Father according to humanity.
  32. And although he is God and man, Christ is one and not two.
  33. One only, not by the conversion of the divinity into the human body, but by the assumption of humanity in God.
  34. Absolutely one only, not by confusion of substance, but by the unity of the person.
  35. For, just as the rational soul and the body form one man, so also God and man is one Christ.
  36. Who suffered for our salvation, descended to the house of the dead and on the third day rose again.
  37. Ascended to the heavens, is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, from whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
  38. At his coming, all men shall rise with their bodies and shall give an account of their own acts.
  39. And those who have done good will go to eternal life; but those who have done evil will go to eternal fire.
  40. This is the Catholic faith, and whoever does not believe in it faithfully and firmly will not be able to save himself.

Glory to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and forever. Amen.

Antiphon. Glory to you, Most Holy Trinity, who are one God, before all times, now and forever. (In the Easter season: Alleluia.)

V. Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry reach you.

Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, who, by the confession of the true faith, granted to your servants the grace to know the glory of the eternal Trinity and to worship the unity in its omnipotence, we beseech you: make it so that, by the steadfastness of this same faith, we may always be protected from all adversity. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
